Longest Cross-strait Highway-Railway Bridge in the World Closured, Deep Participation by Zoomlion’s Tower Cranes Draws World Attention

Currently, major progress has been made in the construction of Pingtan cross-strait highway-railway bridge at Fujian Province. The Guyumen Channel Bridge is closured successfully as the steel truss girder (17.5m long, 36.8m wide and 15m high, weighing 473t) at the closure section is precisely connected with the erected steel truss girder sections at both sides, indicating that Pingtan combined highway-railway bridge, the longest of its kind in the world and the first cross-strait bridge in China, is successfully closured. Nearly 40 Zoomlion’s tower cranes stood in waters to face the challenges from typhoon, rough seas, deep water, rapid surge and corrosion, effectively ensuring the construction progress of Pingtai Bridge Project with their stable performance and efficient operation. The excellent quality of the Zoomlion’s tower cranes has been highly praised and widely recognized by the clients.

With a total length of 16.34km, Pingtan cross-strait highway-railway bridge is the longest of its kind in the world so far, connecting Changle of Fujian Province to Pingtai Integrated Pilot Zone. The bridge adopts a combined highway-railway proposal with the highway at the upper layer and the railway at lower layer. The upper layer is a two-way six-lane highway with a speed limit of 100km/h, while the lower layer is a two-way railway with a speed limit of 200km/h. The Project is the extension of Hefei-Fuzhou Railway and an integral part of Beijing-Taipei Expressway. The bridge is expected to be open to traffic in 2020. The marine highway between mainland China and Taiwan is expected to be connected upon the completion of the Project, making Pingtan the main channel across the straits, and also rapid growth in economic development and cultural exchange will be achieved.

It is known that Pingtan combined highway-railway bridge is the most difficult one to construct in China so far. The Pingtan Strait where the bridge is located is one of the three major strong-wind waters in the world, which is featured by strong wind, high wave, deep water and rough surge. The statistics by Fujian Climate Center show that more than 300 days suffer from strong wind of over level 6 and about 125 days suffer from strong wind of over level 9 each year, and 200 days see surge of over 2.5m throughout the year, with a largest wave height of about 9.69m. It was once called “forbidden region for bridge construction”. The construction conditions are far severe than that of the completed Donghai Bridge, Cross-strait Bridge at Hangzhou Bay and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, in particular the effect of wave current is 10 times greater than that suffered by the bridges over inland rivers like Yangtze River.

The severe construction environment proposes more rigid requirements on the equipment and the constructor, bringing more daunting challenge. China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd., the constructor of the Project, finally selected multiple sets of Zoomlion’s high-end equipment that are of strong typhoon resistance, safety, stability and excellent performance for the construction of this world class project. The marine works of the Project commenced in 2015 and Zoomlion’s tower cranes were delivered to the site one after another in November 2016. Nearly 40 tower cranes of Zoomlion are used in the Project, including super-large tower crane D1100-63V, hammer-head tower crane TC7035-16 and flat-head tower crane TCT7015A-10E.

As the first cross-strait highway-railway bridge, its work quantities are huge. 300,000t steel and 2,660,000t cement were used in the project. These materials are sufficient to build 8 Burj Towers. As the major equipment for vertical and horizontal transportation of such construction materials as reinforcement, formwork and concrete, Zoomlion’s tower cranes play a vital role in the project. “Since their arrival at the site, Zoomlion’s tower cranes always maintain efficient and stable operation in jacking up and lifting, assuring the smooth progress of the project when the construction schedule is tight, the environment is adverse and the valid operating period is less than 100 days.” said the construction leader at the site.

To withstand super-strong wind, Zoomlion has made series of technologic improvements. “To make sure each tower crane is able to jack up at level 7 gale (average wind speed) at working face and work at level 8 gale (average wind speed) at working face, and is able to withstand level 14 (average wind speed) severe typhoon at out-of-service condition, special reinforcement treatment is made on the cargo boom on the basis of standard D1100-63 tower crane configuration to achieve stronger wind resistance; with the same boom length, the number of slewing mechanisms of D1100-63 tower crane is increased from three to four, making sure the tower crane is able to rotate normally in severe typhoon.” Said Mr. Zheng Changming, the director of Zoomlion Research Institute in charge of large flat boom tower crane platforms.
